We had our work cut out for us when our client asked us to convert a former horse barn into an in-law apartment for her mother who was transferring here from Boston to be with her grandchildren. The original barn had the typical center thoroughfare with individual stalls/and planked walls branching off from that space. With a good plan in hand, we set about to create a central living room with tall ceiling, a master bedroom & bath with walk-in shower, guest bedroom, kitchen and laundry and informal dining space. We were able to re-use much of the original barn planking and brick knee-walls. We used a barn door to separate the guest room from the main living area. At either end of Grandma’s new home, we inserted a new double french door. A gourmet kitchen and professional-grade appliances were added for independent living, and I’ll bet for sharing some home-baked chocolate chip cookies with the grandchildren.
